For those who follow my Twitter posts and occasional entry here know that though not a fan of reality television, I do enjoy 'The Biggest Loser' quite a bit.
Now that the new season is underway, it makes me think of what brought these people to campus on the Biggest Loser.
When they show clips of their tryout videos, you see them scarfing down ice cream and Cheeto's like nothing. But I wonder... was that real or to simply gorge to be nominated? A staging?
I ask because in my past, I was a glutton.
Back in my teen years, I could eat two double quarter pounders with cheese, super sized fries, a large soda, and two apple pies at a sitting in McDonalds.
I could eat 12 tacos at Taco Bell without flinching.
I've eaten a large pizza with a full size bag of chips and a 44 ounce soda as a standard dinner.
Okay, so I can't do those things anymore. And you know, I haven't in YEARS.
Now in my late twenties, I'm fighting to eat healthier and have for the last 5 years. No longer can I eat even close to what was above. I don't even try.
Maybe 3-4 times a year will I have pizza, and even those are just a few slices. I don't frequent fast food places, and I've even taken the plunge into eating salads when we go out.
I've been doing this since I was 25. I'm now 29. And I'm currently at the heaviest point that I've ever been at.
How is this possible?
All the veggie burger replacements - the salads instead of the country fried steak and potatoes smothered in gravy -
all for not.
Eating right has caused me to gain weight, while eating badly kept me at a level weight for over 10 years.
I'm seriously ready to chuck the spinach and ground turkey and pick up a deep fried Snickers.
Grrrrrrrrr.........

I engaged in similar gorge-fests when I was a teenager without gaining any weight. The large pizza with a half-gallon of soda is very familiar. I also regularly did the "breakfast of champions", a half-dozen doughnuts with a 2L bottle of Mt. Dew.
Even when I'm controlling my eating really well, I rarely drop below 235. I did pick up some better eating habits, though, like rarely having soda or eating out infrequently. I think some of us just have to engage in regular exercise if we want to go past a certain point. Apparently yard work and shoveling snow won't cut it for me either.
See, and thats the thing. I'm eating better and gaining weight.
My daily regimen:
Breakfast: Oatmeal (sometimes I will add Craisins for more filling)
Lunch: Turkey and cheese with mustard and spinach on whole wheat. 1 light yogurt.
Dinner. Generally grilled chicken with white rice, or a tuna steak, or salmon.
Maybe on some days I'll deviate but not by much.
Ugh. Time to hit the gym again, I suppose.
Dude...I ate at McDonald's the other day. I had a Quarter Pounder, a Big Mac, fries, pop, an apple pie, and a hot fudge sundae with nuts. My body is used to all that food. I bet if I started eating better I'd get fat! You're scaring your body. Go back to McDonald's.
Jason, I know I am a random blogger who happened across your blog via Matt McNutt's site. I too have been in that place. One of the things i discovered...After 4 months of 1200 calories a day and a month of 2hrs/day 6 days/wk workouts I lost nothing the whole month of December. I found out my body was in starvatin mode. It was holding steady and not burning as it should. If I continued that way, I might have actually started to gain. I found out that i actually needed 1800 calories. Since then I have lsot consistently since Jan 6 when I made this change. 8 weeks of losses after adding food. Good Luck on your journey. THis might be another good thing to bring up at that Dr/'s appt!
